چکیده

We show from modeling the Fe Kα line in the ASCA spectra of four X-ray bright narrow emission line galaxies (Seyfert types 1.9 and 2) that two equally viable physical models can describe the observed line profile. The first is discussed by Turner et al. (1998) and consists of emission from a nearly pole-on accretion disk. The second, which is statistically preferred, is a superposition of emission from an accretion disk viewed at an intermediate inclination of ∼48 • and a distinct, unresolved feature that presumably originates some distance from the galaxy nucleus. The intermediate inclination is entirely consistent with unified schemes and our findings challenge recent assertions that Seyfert 2 galaxies are preferentially viewed with their inner regions face-on. We derive mean equivalent widths for the narrow and disk lines of < EQW N >= 60 eV and < EQW D >= 213 eV, respectively. The X-ray data are well described by a geometry in which our view of the active nucleus intersects and is blocked by the outer edges of the obscuring torus, and therefore do not require severe misalignments between the accretion disk and the torus.

We present ASCA X-ray results on two S0 galaxies, NGC 3065 and NGC 4203. In both galaxies, we detected hard X-ray emission from a point-like source at the nucleus. Single power law model having a photon index of ∼1.8 well described the spectra of these sources, while thin thermal emission which is common in S0 galaxies was not detected. The 2–10 keV luminosities of these nuclear sources, 2.2×10...

We report the discovery of the brightest X-ray source hosted by a faint (M B = −16) dwarf galaxy in the immediate vicinity of the ultraluminous IRAS merging galaxy Mrk 273. The dwarf galaxy, 1.3 ′ away from Mrk 273, is at the tip of a faint northeast plume of Mrk 273. Its spectrum exhibits strong [OIII], Hα, [NII] emission lines, which establish the redshift of the dwarf galaxy, z = 0.0376, the...

The GRAPE-4, the world's fastest computer in 1995-1997, has produced some major scientific results, through a wide diversity of large-scale simulations in astrophysics. Applications have ranged from planetary formation, through the evolution of star clusters and galactic nuclei, to the formation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies.

We review the evidence for AGN optical and X-ray broad line emission from an accretion disk. We argue that there is little, if any, statistical evidence to support this assertion. The inconsistency is strongest for the rare class of Balmer profiles that show double peaks. The line profiles predicted by a simple illuminated disk model are often incompatible with the observations. We suggest that...
